Is Tough Love Right For Your Health?

By | Published:

We were sent this tough love photo on Facebook today.

Do you agree?  In truth there are people who really crave this start over approach.  Some feel they need a clean slate from which to grow — nothing wrong with that.

But, really, I have to ask, is there anyone out there who never thinks of better health?  Never once considers whether the food their putting in their mouths is the best option.  Is there anyone out there who does not, at some point in the day, chide themselves for not eating healthy enough, not getting enough exercise or not doing something they “should” be doing for their health?

Aren’t we always working on our health? In some way?

If so, your goal beckons eternally.  Maybe we’re never off the PATH (so to speak).  It’s fair to say we don’t give up so much as we veer.  A veer, in fact, can be a great lesson that prepares us for better results next time we put in our full effort.  But to be sure, we are always, at the very least, contemplating improvement, if we’re human.

What’s exciting to us PATH staffers, as health promotion diehards, is that the PATH is always there.  As soon as you veer back toward it, the options are endless.  Furthermore, landmarks can bring you back at the blink of an eye.

For example, one dedicated PATHer gave up sugar for lent and the PATH Adventure.  When we asked why, the answer was totally human: “I was eating all the sugar before my eyes.  Where I work it’s hugely accessible.  I gave it up last year to make my brain say ‘it’s just not an option.’  I put a poison bubble around it.  I immediately felt better so I kept doing it beyond lent and the Adventure, well into the summer.  Then in the Fall work took a really stressful turn, I was in a new relationship, and so on.  I got off track with everything, and sugar crept back in.  This is my launch pad to squeeze it out again.  I feel better already.”

So, if you’re a tough love kind of person, the opening photo is for you.  If you’re the more typical sensitive and personally brow-beating type, here’s another photo for you…

Oh, and, as an aside, check out the sugar-free dessert recipe below.

You in Your Workplace:

Keep a consistence cadence about your workplace event calendar.  People need to get on and off the train at different times.  Stress ebbs and flows whether we like it or not.  About 50% of our Health Assessment takers say they’ve been through a major crisis in the last six months.  You’re workers are up against a lot. Help them stay resilient with programs they can count on when they need them most.

See you on the PATH Ahead – no matter where you land!
